HOW TO APPLY
Applicants are asked to submit 6 digital images of their Plein Air artwork and an artist statement through www.callforentry.org (CaFÉ ™). Please visit the CaFÉ™ website for complete instructions on how to apply. The entry fee is $25. All applications must be submitted by midnight (Mountain Time) on Friday June 24, 2011. Columbia Center for the Arts will not accept applications directly.

ELIGIBILITY
Any resident of the United States and Canada is eligible to apply. However, upon acceptance, artwork delivered to the exhibition must have been painted on location (in Plein Air) in the last two years in the Pacific Northwest: British Columbia, Washington, Oregon, Northern California, Idaho, or Western Montana.

DEFINITION
For this exhibition, at least 90% of the painting must be completed onsite and outdoors to be considered “Plein Air.”

LOCATION
The Pacific Northwest is a Plein Air Painter’s Paradise. Each year, artists gather in the Columbia River Gorge to take in the stunning beauty of its black basalt cliffs, ribbon-like waterfalls, and lush fir forests. In November 1986, Congress recognized the unique beauty of the Gorge when it made it the nation's first National Scenic Area. A 25th Anniversary celebration for the Gorge will be taking place all year and, fortunately for us, the Gorge Commission will be marketing this special place to increase awareness and bring tourism to the area.

This protected area offers a diverse range of climate zones for artists to paint all within a 60 mile radius. Nestled along the Columbia River, Hood River sits between the two snow-capped volcanoes, Mt. Hood and Mt. Adams. Just a 10-minute drive to the East takes you to the Transitional Zone where the Cascade Mountain Range meets the Desert. The High Desert and Deschutes River are 35 minutes further. To the West, visitors can wander the temperate rain forest and discover alpine lakes and streams. Portland is 1-hour West of Hood River and the scenic Oregon Coast is 2.5 hrs West of Hood River.

SELECTION PROCESS
Phase 1: Artists interested in being featured in the Plein Air Exhibition in September need to apply now and be pre-screened through CaFÉ in order to be included in the Pacific Northwest Plein Air Exhibition. During this initial review, a panel comprised of regional art collectors, artists, and arts professionals will evaluate the submitted images (these images must be examples of your actual Plein Air artwork) to determine if the artist will be invited to participate in the exhibition in September. Approximately 35 artists will be selected based on the Plein Air images they submit. However, the submitted images are not necessarily pieces that are committed to the show; it is our hope that the selected artists will create new pieces specifically for the exhibition and participate in the hosted Paint-out Event. All artists who apply will receive electronic notification of the results of the screening process. Notification will be sent to the email address supplied when applying through CaFÉ.

Phase 2: The Artists identified by the screening committee will be featured in the September Exhibition. Accepted artists are highly encouraged to participate in the paint out event during the week prior to the show opening. Participating in the Paint-out is not mandatory, but we strongly recommend it as, historically, the majority of the artwork sold during the exhibition is created during the Paint-out.

All artwork must be original in concept and executed by the artist within the last two years. Compositions taken from published material or involving copyright infringement issues will not be considered. No student work under supervision is eligible. No work previously featured in the Columbia Gorge Region will be accepted. Artists may deliver up to 5 pieces, with the understanding that there may not be room for all entries in the show. Each accepted artist will show at least 3 pieces. Accepted artists will receive follow up instructions including a detailed prospectus and a site map of the Paint-out locations.

EXHIBITION JUROR
We are pleased to announce that the juror for the 2011 Pacific Northwest Plein Air Exhibition is Jim Lamb. Jim is a respected member of the Plein Air Painters of America, a resident of the Pacific Northwest, and an exceptional judge for Plein Air painting.
Once the exhibition is hung, Jim will select the top paintings which will receive ribbons, cash awards and/or gifts. Recipients of the juror’s awards are automatically invited to participate in the exhibition next year (2012) and need not be screened.

1st Place • 2nd Place • 3rd Place Artists Choice • Best of Columbia River • Best of Historical• 2 Honorable Mention • People’s Choice Prize (details to be announced at a later date).

SUBMISSION
Fine art media will be accepted in the following categories: Oil • Acrylic • Watercolor • Pastel

SIZE
Artwork, including frames, shall not exceed 50 inches in either direction. Minimum image size: 2” x 3”.

PRESENTATION
Artwork must be professionally framed, * wired and ready for hanging. Required details include: Wire in good condition, flat D-rings used on frames, cleaned up canvas edges without visible staples. No work will be accepted with screw-in eye hooks (unless the eye hooks are not protruding beyond the back of the frame) or metal tooth hangers. If you don’t know what these are - please ask and we will be happy to explain.
*Contemporary painters sometimes present their work unframed. This will be acceptable as long as the canvas or wood edge is at least 1.5” thick, and the edges are finished in a professional manner with cleaned up canvas edges and without visible staples. All other hanging requirements will be the same.

SALES
Work must be FOR SALE and priced with intent to sell. • 60% to the artist • 40% commission supports Columbia Art Gallery, a non-profit community art gallery

SHIPPING
If you live outside the local area and wish to ship a piece to or from the show, all packaging, shipping, insurance and related costs are the responsibility of the artist. Artist is to provide all packing material (box, foam, label) for artwork that will be mailed back to artist after the show. Artist will also make arrangements in advance to cover shipping costs.

EXHIBITION DELIVERY AND PICK UP
All hand-delivered artwork must be delivered to Columbia Art Gallery prior to or on Monday, August 29 between noon and 5:00 pm. You may also ship artwork in advance to arrive prior to or on Monday, August 29, 2011 to Columbia Art Gallery, 215 Cascade Street, Hood River, OR 97031. All artists will fill out an Artwork Submission form for artwork entries that includes: Artist Name, Title of Work, Size and Price. This list is your receipt for entries, and must be presented when picking up any and all work. Please pick up all unaccepted entries. Accepted entries, regardless of whether they are sold, may not be removed until close of show. All unsold works must be removed promptly at the end of the show to make room for the next show. Art not picked up within 60 days after the close of the show will become property of the Columbia Art Gallery.

WHAT:   The Columbia Art Gallery Pacific Northwest Plein Air 2010 Quick Draw is an opportunity for everyone to experience painting "en plein air"! This 5.5 hour painting event is open to anyone. Whether you’ve never painted outdoors before or you are a "veteran" —you are welcome! The day ends with the opportunity to show your work (at offer it for sale) at the Gallery during the special Quick Draw Reception. Registration fee is $10 when you register in advance, $15 at the door. All artists may use any medium, but must paint in the plein air tradition (outdoors, in “real time”).

WHEN:  Saturday, September 25, 2010 (Check-in: 9:00 am) Event runs from 9-2:30pm.

WHERE:  Columbia Art Gallery, 215 Cascade Street, Hood River, OR 97031 (Paint in Downtown Hood River and the Hood River Marina).

HOW:  Interested artists will fill out an application. The deadline is September 25, 2010. Registration is $10 when paid in advance and $15 when paid at the door. Checks should be made out to Columbia Art Gallery (or pay online HERE). For more information, contact Celeste Bergin 503 774 3787.

On Saturday, September 25, between 9 am and 9:30 am, check in at Columbia Art Gallery to have your blank canvases stamped and pick up your title & price labels. You may paint as many canvases as you want, but only two pieces will go into the one-evening reception show. You may paint anywhere in Downtown Hood River and at the Hood River Marina. For those interested in painting the figure a model will be located on the lawn of the library. The Quick draw art must be created during the Quick draw time frame.

Your paintings must be delivered to the gallery at 2:30. Each painting is required to be for sale and to have a title and a price written on the label. Paintings will be on display for sale with 60% proceeds going to the artist. We recommend that artists interested in displaying bring a wired frame that fits your supports, or use gallery wrap canvas.

The Columbia Art Gallery will hold a Reception from 6-8pm on Saturday September 25.

Note: This is Columbia Art Gallery’s first year doing a “quick draw” and it is meant to be a no- stress positive event that will expand every successive year. The first 25 registrants will receive a surprise gift and there will be "incentives" announced at the reception. See you there!

SPRINGHOUSE VINEYARD 1127 Canyon Way - directions - i will try to put some kind of marker out on the driveway the night before. 8am to 4pm, but i think they are ok if people go from sun-up to sun-down.

5.5 miles out of Mosier on old hwy 30... then left on Canyon Way, then left on gravel (1127 sign) up hill past big barn for a mile... there you are! Big barn is nat'l forest property, as is much of the driveway...Springhouse owns the little plateau at the end. NO PARKING IN TALL GRASS!!! - fire hazard.

Casual get together for all the artists at Hood River Taqueria, 1210 13th Street, Hood River (all pay separately please! The Taqueria can accommodate this!)
Everyone in the past has really enjoyed this casual get together. It has led to more get togethers and a friendly atmosphere! Come in your paint clothes, we usually sit outside in front of the restaurant, there are lots of tables outside, we just pull together as many as we need. Prices are very reasonable, beer and drinks available. Bring your friends/spouses etc.

2) Saturday Aug 28th, 5 pm
Meet the Artists Reception at Springhouse Cellar, downtown Hood River, across from the train station - wine, cheese + music. . (one glass of wine complimentary to artists, and Kristen Godkin (our plein air event coordinator) will make a few cheese plates complimentary from The Farm Stand.)

SPRINGHOUSE VINEYARD - directions - i will try to put some kind of marker out on the driveway the night before. 8am to 4pm, but i think they are ok if people go from sun-up to sun-down.

5.5 miles out of Mosier on old hwy 30... then left on Canyon Way, then left on gravel (1127 sign) up hill past big barn for a mile... there you are! Big barn is nat'l forest property, as is much of the driveway...Springhouse owns the little plateau at the end. NO PARKING IN TALL GRASS!!! - fire hazard.

EXHIBITON JUROR
We are pleased to announce that the juror for the 2010 Pacific Northwest Plein Air Exhibition is Ned Mueller. Ned is a respected member of the Plein Air Painters of America, a resident of the Pacific Northwest, and an exceptional judge for Plein Air painting.
Once the exhibition is hung, Ned will select the top paintings which will receive ribbons, cash awards and/or gifts.

ARTWORK SUBMISSIONS
Fine art media will be accepted in the following categories:
Oil • Acrylic • Watercolor • Pastel

All artwork must be original in concept and executed by the artist within the last two
years. Compositions taken from published material or involving copyright infringement issues
will not be considered. No student work under supervision is eligible. No work previously
featured in the Columbia Gorge Region will be accepted. Artists may deliver up to 6 pieces,
with the understanding that there may not be room for all entries in the show; at least 4 pieces
will be shown by each accepted artist.

SIZE
Artwork, including frames, shall not exceed 50 inches in either direction. Minimum image size 2” x 3”.

PRESENTATION
Artwork must be professionally framed,* wired and ready for hanging. Required details include: Wire in good condition, flat D-rings used on frames, cleaned up canvas edges without visible staples. No work will be accepted with screw-in eye hooks (unless the eye hooks are not protruding beyond the back of the frame) or metal tooth hangers. If you don’t know what these are - please ask and we will be happy to explain.
*Contemporary painters sometimes present their work unframed. This will be acceptable as long as the canvas or wood edge is at least 1.5” thick, and the edges are finished in a professional manner with cleaned up canvas edges and without visible staples. All other hanging requirements will be the same.

SALES
Work must be FOR SALE and priced with intent to sell.
• 60% to the artist
• 40% commission supports Columbia Art Gallery, a non profit community art gallery

SHIPPING
If you live outside the local area and wish to ship a piece to or from the show, all packaging, shipping, insurance and related costs are the responsibility of the artist. Artist is to provide all packing material (box, foam, label) for artwork that will be mailed back to artist after the show. Artist will also make arrangements in advance to cover shipping costs.

EXHIBITION DELIVERY AND PICK UP
All hand-delivered artwork must be delivered to Columbia Art Gallery prior to or on Monday, August 30 between noon and 5:00 pm. You may also ship artwork in advance to arrive prior to or on Monday, August 30, 2010 to Columbia Art Gallery, 215 Cascade Street, Hood River, OR 97031.

All artists will fill out an Artwork Submission form for artwork entries that includes: Artist Name, Title of Work, Size and Price. This list is your receipt for entries, and must be presented when picking up any and all work.

Please pick up all unaccepted entries.

Accepted entries, regardless of whether they are sold, may not be removed until close of show.

All unsold works must be removed promptly at the end of the show to make room for the next show. Art not picked up within 60 days after the close of the show will become property of the Columbia Art Gallery. Below is a list of our preferred pickup options that will coordinate with the gallery’s business hours:

~ Pick up Option #2: Monday, Sept 27 from 10am – 6pm

Orientation was held today at The Gorge White House. The participants heard about how things are going to work this year, received gifts from sponsors and then fanned out to select their spots. The Gorge White House property is the quintessential plein air painting location, with Mt. Adams in the North, Mt. Hood in the South, a fruit orchard, a huge dahlia garden, not to mention the historic White House itself. Thanks, once again, to Camille Hukari for letting us come here to paint.

Camping is in grassy field with some sparse trees - no sand, gravel or asphalt slabs anywhere! This place is highly casual and folks just wander in and set up camp.

Pacific Northwest Plein Air Gallery Exhibition

Columbia Art Gallery in Hood River, Oregon announces its September Exhibition, “Pacific Northwest Plein Air 2009, Painting Outdoors from the Mountains to the Sea” featuring 32 Regional Artists. The Pacific Northwest is Plein Air Painter Paradise. Each year, artists gather in the Columbia River Gorge to take in the stunning beauty of its black basalt cliffs, ribbon-like waterfalls, and lush fir forests. In November 1986, Congress recognized the unique beauty of the Gorge when it made it the nation's first National Scenic Area. In a very small area, there is a diverse range of climate zones for artists to paint.

This year’s 5th Annual Pacific Northwest Plein Air exhibit focuses on paintings and about our natural surroundings. The artists for this event are dedicated to the historic tradition of painting directly from life. Through this approach of firsthand observation, they capture atmospheric conditions, light, and beautiful scenery that surrounds us all. The public is invited to the artists’ reception and show opening on Friday, September 4, from 6 - 8pm. The show will continue through September 27.

Show Coordinator, Cathleen Rehfeld, has been organizing this event in Hood River since its conception 5 years ago. “Every year more artists apply and more collectors come to buy. We are fortunate that Hood River offers such a good central location for artists to congregate and also provide quick access to the variety of climate zones within a 30 mile radius,” Rehfeld says of the event. As most of you know, we try to find places to paint that will be beautiful to paint, inspiring, and with a certain level of comfort for everyone, restrooms and places to park etc. What's that saying? You can't please all of the people all of the time? I hope we please all the painters some of the time, anyway. We try to select all of our sites carefully, with the painters in mind.

The Gorge White House
Owner Camille Hukari, has a beautifully restored home and a lovely orchard/farm that has many things of interest to paint, a pear orchard, a huge field of u-cut flowers, gladiolas, dahlias and many more I don't know the names of.
Troutlake Washington, Hollenbeck Park
Located in very scenic Troutlake, WA. The residents of Troutlake are very excited to have us paint there this year. Troutlake is unbelievably beautiful, with striking close up views of Mt. Adams.
Hood River, Oregon Downtown
Bustling and busy small town atmosphere. Lots of interesting buildings and people to paint in downtown.

Another 2 sites, but we haven't decided where yet. We are still scouting around for something new, where we haven't painted before, there is so much to choose from here! I will keep you posted.

Jury Fee (Pacific Northwest Plein Air Show): $25.00

Unlike previous Pacific Northwest Plein Air application processes, this year’s will be conducted entirely online. All applications must be submitted by midnight (Mountain Time) on June 30, 2009. Columbia Center for the Arts will not accept applications directly. If you are new to CaFÉ, please allow yourself enough time to become familiar with the application system and requirements. Applicants are asked to submit 6 digital images and an artist statement through www.callforentry.org. Please visit the website for complete instructions on how to apply. There is no fee to register and use this website.

ELIGIBILITY
Any resident of the United States is eligible to apply. However, submitted artwork must have been painted on location in the Pacific Northwest: British Columbia, Washington, Oregon, California, Idaho, or Montana.

LOCATION
The Pacific Northwest is Plein Air Painter Paradise. Each year, artists gather in the Columbia River Gorge to take in the stunning beauty of its black basalt cliffs, ribbon-like waterfalls, and lush fir forests. In November 1986, Congress recognized the unique beauty of the Gorge when it made it the nation's first National Scenic Area. In a very small area, there is a diverse range of climate zones for artists to paint. Nestled along the Columbia River, the town of Hood River sits between the two snow capped volcanoes Mt. Hood and Mt. Adams. Only a 10 minute drive to the East takes you to the Transitional Zone where the Cascade Mountain Range meets the Desert. The High Desert and Deschutes River are 35 minutes further. To the West, visitors can wander the temperate rain forest and discover alpine lakes and streams. Portland is 1 hour West of Hood River and the scenic Oregon Coast is 2.5 hrs West of Hood River.

Thursday Orientation for Plein Air Painters at the Gorge White House in Hood River, OR

Here is the group. I think about 25 artists showed up. Thanks to Camille Hukari for letting us come here to paint, it is a beautiful place to paint. Mt. Adams is visible and Mt. Hood from Camille's property. The dahlias were all in bloom and the pear orchard was about ready to be harvested too.

Mt. Hood and Valley

We are getting very excited about the upcoming events for the Pacific Northwest Plein Air Show. The painting days are coming up soon, August 28-Sept 1. Then the Opening Reception open to the public, First Friday in September, Sept 5, 6-8pm. Artists will receive awards AND it is the night for the Fundraising Prius Car Raffle for the Columbia Center for the Arts. They will be giving away a Toyota Prius to a lucky raffle ticket holder, a maximum of 1800 tickets will be sold. Check the Columbia Center for the Arts if you would like to buy a ticket - $40 for a chance to win a Prius. See you there!

Directions to Plein Air sites

All directions assume one knows how to reach Hood River, Oregon.

1) Thursday Aug 28 - The Gorge White House
From the intersection near I-84’s Exit 64 (a right off the ramp, curvy road, straight through next stop sign), take Hwy. 35 (on the east side of town) south 4 miles. It is on the left. If you reach the Pine Grove Store and a gas station at a blinking yellow light, you missed it.

2) Friday Aug 29 - Maryhill Museum Note: Not Maryhill Winery as previously stated
Maryhill is 47 miles from Hood River. Two options:
Take I-84 east to I-97; wind up the hill to SR14. Take a left (heading west); Maryhill is the enormous concrete mansion on the left.
-or-
Take I-84 east and cross the Columbia River using the Hood River Bridge (Exit 64) or the I-197 bridge on the far end of The Dalles. Drive north to SR14; take a right and continue east until you see aforementioned mansion (you will pass Maryhill Winery).

3) Saturday Aug 30 - Western Antique Aeroplane & Automobile Museum
From I-84’s Exit 62, take a right and another, immediate, right on Country Club Road. Follow it until it hits a T (it’s a few miles); take a left on Barrett Drive. Go through two stop signs (the second is “Windmaster Corner,” after which you will be on Tucker Road); the museum is on the same property as the airport, on the right.

4) Sunday Aug 31 - Sakura Ridge Bed & Breakfast
From I-84’s Exit 62, take a right and another, immediate, right on Country Club Road. Follow it until it hits a T (it’s a few miles); take a right on Barrett Drive, a left on Sunset Road and a right on York Hill Drive (you’re basically skirting property lines with the zig-zagging). At the point that York Hill Drive is declared a dead end, keep going. The road will become gravel; go through the main gate and the orchard.

If you are coming to Sakura Ridge from the other direction on Oak Street, you will be taking a left on to Country Club Road.

5) Monday Sept 1 - Downtown Hood River
Oak Street is the main drag downtown, but you can paint anywhere. There are a couple of nice parks downtown too. Today is the deadline to turn in paintings to the art center by 5pm.

The Pacific Northwest is Plein Air Painter Paradise
The Mt. Hood and Hood River area is unique and very attractive to a Plein Air painter. In a very small area, there is a very diverse range of climate zones to paint. Here in Hood River, we have the small town atmosphere, there is the Columbia River, Hood River, and Mt Hood. You can get to Mt. Hood in 45 mins, Mt. Adams in an hour, the Desert and High Desert is 20 minutes away, the Transitional Zone is 10 minutes away, and the Deschutes River is 45 minutes East. Then there is the Coast which is only 2.5 hrs West of Hood River.

2007 Pacific Northwest Plein Air Show in the Columbia Art Gallery :: Hood River, Oregon

Last year 21 artists were chosen to participate in this event from an open, juried process. There were over 75 paintings in the show. There was 1st, 2nd and 3rd place, and two honorable mention awards for Plein Air work, one Best of Studio Work award, and three Purchase Awards. The juror for the show was Susan Diehl, a well known plein air painter from Arizona.

Plein Air Painting and Writing for Children at Rasmussen Farms

Meet at Columbia Center for the Arts and ride the CAT bus to Rasmussen Farm for magical day of plein air painting and writing with visual arts specialist, Shelley Toon Hight and creative writing instructor, Erica Rench. Children’s paintings and writing will be displayed as part of the Plein Air Show at Columbia Center for the Arts.
